Get ready for the penultimate tournament of the season and the continuing race to end next week’s RSM Classic in the top 125 of the rankings in order to secure playing rights for next season.
Last year’s event was highly emotional as Camilo Villegas claimed his first win since he and his wife lost their daughter Mia to brain cancer.
It is likely that this year’s championship will be less highly-charged but expect drama because winning has the potential to absolutely transform the short and long term fortunes of the majority of players in the field.
And while some are just seeking a top 125 spot, others are looking to make the top 60 which will guarantee them starts in next year’s Signature Events.
There’s all to play for but who will take the honors? Let’s find out.
Year | Champion and Winning Score | Runner-up and Score |
---|---|---|
2023 | Camilo Villegas (Colombia) -24 (Playoff) | Alex Noren (Sweden) -24 |
2022 | Seamus Power (Ireland) -19 | Thomas Detry (Belgium) -18 |
2021 | Lucas Herbert (Ausralia) -15 | Danny Lee (New Zealand) -14 |
Patrick Reed (USA) -14 | ||
2020 | Brian Gay (USA) -15 (Playoff) | Wyndham Clark (USA) -15 |
2019 | Brendon Todd (USA) -24 | Harry HIggs (USA) -20 |
The Robert Trent Jones Sr.-designed layout is a par 71 that plays to 6,828 yards
Sea breezes are a factor and determine the scoring
Players who are proven in the wind have thrived here
There is Bermuda grass on the greens
The last three winners (and three of four runners-up) have been international golfers
This has been a year of remarkable consistency for the Irishman. In all, 16 of his 27 starts have been top 40s and eight of those top 20s but his best finish has been 10th. On the other hand, that result is one of four top 15s in his last four starts. This is his fifth start at Port Royal, he has never missed the cut, was 12th in 2021 and the winner in 2022.

The 29-year-old is another reliable performer. In his case he has made 123 starts in the last five seasons on the PGA Tour racking up 41 top 25 finishes including a trio of top threes but he is yet to win. Last week he added to his tally of near-misses with sixth place in Mexico but his Robert Trent Jones Sr. record is like his career: four starts, four top 40s, no top 20.

The 33-year-old Canadian has two wins on the PGA Tour and both have come in the Fall - the 2016 RSM Classic and the 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship. Moreover, in his two starts this Fall he’s added to his impressive record at this time of year with a pair of top eight finishes. He’ll be making his course debut this week.

There’s a lot to like about the 26-year-old Taiwanese golfer’s best form this year with regard to this week.
He’s finished third in The American Express, ninth in the Cognizant Classic and was a winner of the Sanderson Farms Championship - all of them one Bermuda grass greens.
He was also sixth by the ocean at Torrey Pines and fourth at The Dunes which is an RTJ Sr. track.
The clincher is his course form.
He was third on debut in 2022 and 30th last year when carding low rounds of 63 and 65.
Back him each way with Caesars Sportsbook offering +4000 for six places.

The American is a two-time winner on the DP World Tour but is yet to cross the finishing line first on the PGA Tour.
This week gives him a fine opportunity, however.
At the start of September he finished second in the Procore Championship and he was sixth last week in Mexico - so he’s bang in form.
When he was a regular in Europe he finished fifth at Roayl Dar in Morocco and fourth at Valderrama in Spain, both of them RTJ Sr. courses and he was 13th at Port Royal last year.
Back him each way at a generous +6600 with bet365 paying five places.

Chesson Hadley first hinted that he liked playing golf by the ocean on a blustery course when winning the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open back in 2014.
His career has not taken off since but he has continued to show his face in similar conditions since and there are good reasons to believe that he has another decent effort in him this week.
And the simple reason for that is his record on RTJ Sr. layouts.
He’s been 39th, 11th and 27th at Grand National; 16th and 17th at Port Royal; and he was 10th at The Dunes earlier this year.
His only failure to land a top 40 came at Bellerive in the 2018 PGA CHampionship - in other words at a much higher level.
So, up against field such as this week’s on an RTJ Sr. design, he is 7-for-7 at finishing top 40.
Back him to do it again at -110 with BetMGM.
