This year’s edition of the tournament will have a $50,000 prize pool with an additional perk: the tournament winners will be awarded a week-long boot camp package at the luxurious 5-star InterContinental Hotel in Malta. The group stage of the tournament is already underway, and currently, Level UP has a tally of 0 wins and 2 losses, while Yellow Submarine has zero wins and a single loss so far.
Despite the similar win tallies, the oddsmakers strongly favor Level UP to win the upcoming match. With sportsbooks rating Yellow Submarine as an eight-to-one underdog, finding a decent performance in the upcoming match seems like a challenging longshot for the Russian Team. While both teams have had relatively decent success since their formation in the mid-2010’s, neither have been able to realize glory on the global stage.
Incidentally, the Yellow Submarine team was formed in 2015 to compete in the International 2015: Europe Qualifier, where they failed to qualify. Since then, the team has been in and out of the regional competitive Dota 2 circuit as a journeyman squad that would also find itself coming up short in the more elite tournaments.
Similarly, Level UP is a Dota 2 team currently based in Serbia. The team’s first major success came at the WEST Adriatic Regional Qualifiers, where they were able to score a 2-0 upset win over Elements Pro Gaming. Like their upcoming opponents in Yellow Submarine, they would spend the next few years hovering in the mid-pack of the regional Dota 2 circuit, while consistently failing to make an impression on the international circuit. The team’s fortunes would change in 2023 when they put together a string of first-place finishes before finishing the European Pro League Season 11 in third place.
Level UP’s performances in 2023 are clearly indicative of a team that is on the rise and it will be interesting to see how the team performs in upcoming tournaments before the 2024 season. For this upcoming match-up, there’s no reason to believe that Yellow Submarine has the capability to derail Level UP who seem to be leveling up their skill level. On paper, it should be an easy win for Level UP.
While the two teams have yet to face each other, there are several hundred places separating their global Dota 2 rankings. Some platforms have Level UP ranked at 163, while Yellow Submarine is all the way back at 773.
Over the past thirty days, Level UP has played nine matches, out of which they won five and lost four. During the same period, Yellow Submarine has only played a single match, which they lost.
With some sources on the internet giving them an 87% chance of losing this upcoming match, Yellow Submarine has their work cut out for them. With its active squad consisting of Satanic, Cateenkatin, egxrdemxn, Fill and aik, not much is known about the team’s current form or future capabilities due to them being relatively inactive in comparison to other squads in the tournament. Their last tournament on record was a 5th-8th place finish in the Dota 2 Champions League Season 7 Open Qualifier. Since then, the team has been underground.
Their inactivity and absence from the scene have contributed to the oddsmakers placing almost no faith in them for the upcoming tournament. We hope that they have used this time to grind away and upgrade their skills to catch up to the current meta.
Level UP announced a brand new roster for the current season, consisting of Daxak, lorenof, OwnedMe, swedenstrong and MiLAN. Compared to the team’s previous players, Daxak is a relatively decorated star who has several tournaments to his credit, including two wins in the Dota 2 Champions League: Season 13 and Season 9.
The roster refresh seems to have brought on a change in fortunes for the Balkans-based team as they strung together several strong finishes throughout 2023, including 5th–8th place in the last edition of the Pinnacle Cup.
Sixteen teams will participate in the tournament. Twelve teams are seeded into the group stage, while four are seeded directly into the playoffs. The group stage follows two single round-robin groups of six teams each, while the playoffs follow a single elimination bracket.
