Gen.G and T1 aren’t just the best teams in the LCK, they’re two of the best teams in all of LoL esports. They’re unsurprisingly the favorites to win the LCK this season, with KT Rolster the only real challenger.
The bookmakers have got T1 winning this tie, but there isn’t a massive gap in the odds. Gen.G and T1 won one match each in the group stages last season before Gen.G got the better of T1 in the final with a 3-1 scoreline.
T1 will certainly not take Gen.G lightly after what happened last season, so we think they’ll be more motivated to win this tie. Gen.G, of course, will want to prove to everyone that last season’s win in the finals was no fluke, but this is just a group game, so we don’t think they’ll put in the same kind of effort this time.
T1 are the tournament favorites. Winning this match will make them believe they can go all the way. Last season’s loss was a massive disappointment, considering they’d lost just one game in the group season. This is a fantastic shot at redemption, and they’ve just got players with the skill and character to win this match and become champions again.
Faker, often considered the greatest LoL esports player of all time, isn’t the force of nature he once was, but he still has a lot to offer. He has averaged 2.78 kills, 2.47 deaths, and 5.86 assists per match this year. He has become a mid-laner in his latter years, showing his range. His experience will be vital if T1 want to win the LCK title once again. He’s had a long career and knows what it’s like to be on the winning and losing sides, picking a side up when they’re down, and kicking on after a successful season. As long as he’s on the side, everyone will stay composed.
All eyes will also be on Gumayusi, who has looked outstanding this season. The bot laner has averaged 4.59 kills, 1.99 deaths, and 4.79 assists per match this year. If he’s on his game, there’s little that any other team can do to stop them. Everyone else in the team is also a capable contributor, which has been at the heart of T1’s success over the years. They don’t have a lot of weak points.
The 3-1 loss to Gen.G in last season’s final will be fresh in their memory, but they have to forget that before heading into this game. Teams still fear them, and they need to play to their high standards. Teams might also take them a bit lightly because of last season’s loss in the finals, which will help them early in the season. Losing another match will make them more vulnerable, so this isn’t a game they can afford to lose. We think they’ll get over the line in this match.
Gen.G are the current champion, but the bookmakers and most fans don’t believe that they can pull it off again despite being in the run to win the league every season for the last three years. If they win this match, there’s no doubt everyone will finally have to treat them as T1’s equals. Great sports leagues are made up of great rivalries, and Gen.G have pushed T1 to the limit for the last few years; they can’t stop now. This game might not have a huge bearing on qualification, but it’s important for the team’s confidence.
The change in the roster has helped them land the spring title, so it will be fascinating to see if the upgrade has been good enough for them to win back-to-back titles. They’ve got some real superstars in their roster who’ve got better numbers than their contemporaries in T1.
Peyz has averaged 4.81 kills, 1.72 deaths, and 4.61 assists per match this year. Even T1’s Gumayusi doesn’t have the numbers to match up to Peyz.T1 will have their hands full with him, and it’ll be interesting to see how they attempt to neutralize his threat.
Gen.G still don’t have the sort of expectations that T1 have, which should help them in this tie and for the rest of the tournament. We think they’ll put in a fight in this match but come short ultimately. It might be a very different scenario when these teams meet later in the tournament, but T1 have a lot more to lose from this game, so we’re going with the favorites ahead of the champions.
