With the matches in the T20 World Cup moving towards the breezy venues in the Caribbean Islands, where the pitches are slow and sluggish, spinners and spin-hitters have come to the fore. While Australia struggled to chase down Afghanistan’s total on Saturday, one man stood tall, trying to wade the team out of trouble: Glenn Maxwell.
Fresh off a brilliant half-century in the game, Maxwell will be up against India’s spin trio of Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, all of whom he’s very familiar with. Maxwell is Australia’s best player of spin and to thwart this Indian bowling on the Gros Islet wicket, where the ball has held onto the surface, the Aussies need Maxwell. Luckily he’s in top form and has a solid record against India in T20Is as they head for this crunch Super Eight game.

India’s best batter in the T20 World Cup, Rishabh Pant comes off the back of another good knock against Bangladesh, smashing 36 off 24 balls in a belligerent cameo. The Indian wicket-keeper batter has 152 runs in five matches in the tournament, averaging 38, and has looked at his best on slower tracks with his power game coming to the fore.
Pant got a promotion up the order this tournament and has capitalized on it from No.3 to make some useful runs for the team. Australia’s biggest threats in the middle overs are Adam Zampa and Pat Cummins. Pant is aided by the fact that he’s a left-hander facing Zampa’s deliveries that will turn into him, helping him to hit to the leg-side.
Cummins’ lengths also help Pant to stay on the backfoot and play his power shots through the leg-side. In good form after his return to international cricket following an accident, Pant will hope to fire when the team needs him to the most.

Australia’s ODI and Test captain, Pat Cummins’ place in the T20I squad was questioned ahead of the tournament. But the pacer has silenced critics with a spectacular bowling performance, taking nine wickets in four matches. In fact, he broke a record in the game against Afghanistan when he picked up his second hat-trick in the tournament, becoming the only bowler to take multiple hat-tricks in T20 World Cup history.
Cummins had also snared a hat-trick against Bangladesh in just the previous game. Up against India, Cummins will know exactly what to do, having played a key role in triumphing over this Indian side in the final of the ODI World Cup last year in India. With pace variations and steep bounce being his weapons, Cummins can trouble the Indian middle-order and it’s very likely that he will once again be among the wickets.

A key, yet underrated factor, behind Afghanistan’s successful run in this T20 World Cup and the ODI World Cup prior to that has been the runs coming from the openers, Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz. While Gurbaz’s potential is well known and the opening batter has a documented record that is eye-catching in this format, an understated star in this line-up, especially on these West Indian pitches, is Zadran.
A traditional player who takes his time to settle in and play an impactful knock, Zadran has been involved in two century opening stands with Gurbaz this tournament. As he faces up to a Bangladesh attack that has blown hot and cold, expect Zadran to once again be in good touch. With 211 runs in six matches, Zadran is the fourth-highest run-scorer this tournament. He has two half-centuries in six matches and as Afghanistan aim for another big win against Bangladesh to push their semi-final chances, Zadran’s batting at the top will be crucial.

Shakib Al Hasan hasn’t yet had a fruitful tournament, but in the game against India the other day, the experienced spinner showed how he can play a big role on these pitches. He won the battle against the swashbuckling Rohit Sharma by deceiving him with turn and flight. Shakib will know exactly how to bowl on these pitches and Afghanistan will face a stiff ask fronting up to him.
Taking the new ball against India in the last few games, Shakib has made an impact early on and with Bangladesh aiming to bow out on a high, the all-rounder will be keen to bowl an incisive spell once again before he makes his way out.
