The overall record between the two sides is skewed towards Melbourne Renegades, who have claimed 10 matches as opposed to 6 wins by the Thunder. However, Sydney Thunder have won four of the previous five encounters and have a stronger unit on paper. We predict Sydney Thunder to win this clash on Thursday.

The match no. 47 of the Big Bash League 2022-23 will witness Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Renegades battling it out in what will be a crucial game for both. The two teams will meet at Manuka Oval in Canberra on Thursday, January 19th.
Sydney Thunder find themselves outside top five on the table, having lost three games on the trot. They have 10 points from 11 games, having won five and lost six. The Thunder had lost three in a row earlier in the season as well, to which they had responded with four consecutive wins.
In the previous game against Hobart, they were bowled out for 135 with Oliver Davies being the top scorer with 45 off 38. They had reduced the Hurricanes to 20 for 3 in the second innings before Tim David took the game away. Daniel Sams was excellent with the ball, claiming 4 for 18 but didn't have any support.
The Aaron Finch-led Melbourne Renegades have exceeded expectations, winning six of their matches. They are in the top half of the table with 12 points and a net run-rate of 0.010. The Renegades are coming off a miraculous victory by six runs in the derby.
Sam Harper scored 51 off 34 while Jonathan Wells smashed a 24-ball 44 as the 'Gades posted a decent total of 162/7. The Stars needed 54 off 51 with eight wickets in hand when the men in red clawed their way back in. Kane Richardson starred with 2 for 17 in four overs while Tom Rogers picked two important scalps at the back end.
Sydney Thunder will be hoping for a big knock from David Warner, who has had back to back failures on his BBL return. Oliver Davies continues to be in great touch but the likes of Alex Ross, Daniel Sams and Ben Cutting need to do better. Sam Whiteman hasn't grabbed his chances and could be replaced by Joel Davies. The pace attack of Nathan McAndrew, Brendon Doggett and Sams have done a good job. Usman Qadir and Chris Green handle the spin responsibility.
Melbourne Renegades have several out of form players in the batting unit, including the senior duo of Martin Guptill and Aaron Finch. Sam Harper has been a shining light for them, playing key role in the middle order. Jonathan Wells returning to form in the previous game gives some boost. Kane Richardson and Tom Rogers have done a solid job with the ball while Will Sutherland has also stepped up at times. Ruwantha Kellepotha and Fawad Ahmed will be the two spinners.
Sam Harper has been in fabulous touch and carried the Renegades batting in the last three games. He smashed an unbeaten 89 off 48 to single-handedly win the game versus the Hurricanes and followed it up with 63 off 36 against Adelaide Strikers. In the previous game, Harper scored a 36-ball 51 and remains a key player.
Daniel Sams is coming off an excellent spell in the previous game, where he snared 4 for 18 in his four overs. The left arm seamer has picked 15 wickets in the ongoing BBL season at a strike rate of 12.3. With the bat, Sams has only scored 66 runs in nine innings but he's a much better player than that.
