The two-time former champions Sydney Sixers and last year's runners-up Adelaide Strikers are set to lock horns in the all-important final of the women's Big Bash League 2022. The two teams will meet at North Sydney Oval on Saturday, November 26th.
Sydney Sixers were by far the best side in the group stage of this season. The Ellyse Perry-led side finished with 11 wins and lost only two games. They're on a five-match winning streak and would be looking to claim their third WBBL title.
In their final group match, the Sixers defeated Hobart Hurricanes by eight wickets. Kate Peterson picked three wickets while Perry and Sophie Ecclestone bagged two each to bowl out the opponents for 156. Perry then made 56* off 39 with Ashleigh Gardner smashing 45* off 29 to take the side home.
Adelaide Strikers have lost two finals and would want to break the curse on the third attempt. They finished second on the table with eight wins and had to go through the Challenger to reach the final. In the Challenger, Tahlia McGrath's women defeated Brisbane Heat by six wickets at Adelaide.
Megan Schutt starred with the ball, picking 3 for 26 while Deandra Dottin also bagged 2 for 29 to restrict the Heat to 154/8. Chasing the target, they lost two early wickets before Dottin provided a boost with a 21-ball 39. Laura Wolvaardt scored 47 off 45 before Bridget Patterson smashed 45* off 26 to book the spot in the final.
Both teams have had one victory each in their battles this season. It's all to play for when they meet on Saturday.
Sydney Sixers have a fantastic batting unit, starting with Alyssa Healy and Suzie Bates at the top. They then have Ellyse Perry, Ashleigh Gardner, Erin Burns, and Sophie Ecclestone, all of whom have been outstanding in the season. The Sixers have five batters averaging over 35, four of which have struck at over 145. The spin duo of Gardner and Ecclestone has been magnificent with the ball as well while Perry has chipped in at times. Kate Peterson and Lauren Cheatle have also done a good job.
Adelaide Strikers have Katie Mack and Laura Wolvaardt at the top of the order. Wolvaardt has picked up form in the second half of the season. Captain Tahlia McGrath is capable of putting in a match-winning performance as she did in the final group fixture. Bridget Patterson and Madeline Penna have also made crucial contributions. In the bowling unit, they have Megan Schutt and Amanda Wellington at the top of their game. The likes of Darcie Brown, Jemma Barsby, and Dottin have played good supporting roles.
Ashleigh Gardner has had a spectacular season and was voted as the player of the tournament for her all-around brilliance. She has scored 339 runs in 14 games at an average of 31 while striking 153, including two fifties. Gardner has also bagged 23 wickets with her right arm off-break, conceding at just 6.42 rpo, and has best figures of 4 for 23.
Deandra Dottin has been instrumental in Adelaide Strikers reaching the final. The West Indian powerhouse has scored 310 runs in this campaign, averaging 24 and striking at 111 with two fifties. Dottin doubles up as a frontline seamer and has picked 12 scalps. She made a big impact in the Challenger, picking 2 for 29 in four overs and smashing 39 off 21 with the bat.
