Going by records, Chennai Super Kings have always had the upper hand against Royal Challengers Bangalore. The Yellow Army have managed to emerge victoriously against Bangalore on 18 occasions, while Bangalore have defeated Chennai only nine times. With recent form also being inclined towards Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men, it will be safe to say that CSK is the favorites for this clash.
Chennai Super Kings: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf du Plessis, Moeen Ali, Ambati Rayudu/Narayan Jagadeesan, Suresh Raina, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Josh Hazlewood/Lungi Ngidi
Royal Challengers Bangalore: Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, K Srikar Bharat/Rajat Patidar, Glenn Maxwell, Wanindu Hasaranga/Tim David, AB de Villiers, Sachin Baby/Shahbaz Ahmed, Kyle Jamieson, Harshal Patel, Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal.
After a fantastic start to their IPL 2021 campaign, which saw them winning four matches on the bounce, Royal Challengers Bangalore have seemingly lost their mojo. Virat Kohli’s men lost two of their last three matches of the first phase and started off their UAE phase with a humbling 9-wicket defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders.
Though still sitting at third place, Bangalore will try to avoid piling up defeats, and to do so, they will have to get the better of Chennai Super Kings. The men in yellow had a good start to their UAE phase, as they defeated reigning champions Mumbai Indians by 20 runs in their last outing.
Given their dominant display in the previous match, there is simply no need for Chennai Super Kings to make changes for this clash. However, it will be interesting to see whether Ambati Rayudu is fit enough to feature, after he injured his left hand in the last match. In case he is unable to play, Chennai might replace him with Narayan Jagadeesan, who has had a fantastic Tamil Nadu Premier League campaign. Josh Hazlewood might have picked up the wicket of Kieron Pollard in the last match, but he went for plenty of runs. So, his place might be taken up by Lungi Ngidi in this match.
Unlike CSK, Royal Challengers Bangalore might have a host of changes to their playing XI. The decision to play K Srikar Bharat did not really work out in the last match, so his place might be taken up by Rajat Patidar. Wanindu Hasaranga also had a day to forget, and he could make way for Singaporean cricketer Tim David. Sachin Baby also had a poor game, and understandably so, he is likely to be replaced by Shahbaz Ahmed, who is a decent batter and can also be handy with the ball.
Glenn Maxwell: Glenn Maxwell magically attracts mega-money bids in every auction, but this time around, he has done justice to his hefty price tag. The Australian batter is the highest run-scorer for Bangalore with 233 runs in seven innings. Besides AB de Villiers, he is the only Bangalore batter to have struck more than one half-century this season.
Faf du Plessis: Though now at the autumn of his career, Faf du Plessis is going strong for the Super Kings. The Protean has scored 320 runs in eight matches, which includes four half-centuries. Interestingly, one of those half-centuries came against Bangalore, when the two sides met earlier this season at the Wankhede Stadium.
