Mumbai Indians hold the upper hand when it comes to head-to-head records. These two teams have crossed paths 30 times in the past, in which the boys in blue have emerged victoriously on 16 occasions, with Delhi having the last laugh 14 times. Given the Capitals’ massive list of absentees.
Mumbai Indians are the favourites to win this match. (-126)

Delhi Capitals: Tim Seifert, Prithvi Shaw, KS Bharat, Rishabh Pant (wk/captain), Rovman Powell, Sarfaraz Khan, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Chetan Sakariya, Kuldeep Yadav, Khaleel Ahmed.
Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma (captain), Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Tilak Varma, Anmolpreet Singh, Tim David, Kieron Pollard, Daniel Sams, Jasprit Bumrah, Tymal Mills, Mayank Markande, Murugan Ashwin.
Mumbai Indians, the most successful franchise of the Indian Premier League, will kickstart their 2022 campaign with a game against Delhi Capitals. The team that Mumbai have assembled in the auction has received mixed reviews, largely because the success of the team hinges on the performance of a few mega-money signings.
Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, who was signed for a gigantic price tag of INR 15.25 crores, will be the X-factor of the team alongside Rohit Sharma, while Jasprit Bumrah and Tymal Mills are expected to lead the bowling contingent.
Delhi Capitals have not have ever had the opportunity of lifting this trophy, but they have been a very consistent lot over the last few seasons. The team from the Indian capital has built a formidable squad for the upcoming edition as well, but the majority of their stars will not be available in the first game due to national commitment and mandatory three-day quarantine guideline.
Mumbai Indians are expected to miss a couple of players from their roster. While Englishman Jofra Archer is the obvious omission given that he will feature only from IPL 2023, top-order batter Suryakumar Yadav could also miss this tie as he is yet to recover from a hairline fracture. With Kishan and Sharma opening the article, we have predicted Anmolpreet Singh and N Tilak Verma to comprise the top-order. Bumrah and Mills could be the frontline pacers with Daniel Sams and Kieron Pollard providing alternate options, while Mumbai are likely to field two leg-spinners in Mayank Markande and Murugan Ashwin.
Delhi Capitals will miss as many as five overseas stars in this clash. While Anrich Nortje is yet to recover from his injury, Aussie duo David Warner and Mitchell Marsh are tied to their national duties. Besides that, pace twins Mustafizur Rahman and Lungi Ngidi have joined the team’s bio-bubble, but three days of quarantine could effectively rule them out from featuring in this game. In such a scenario, Rishabh Pant is expected to have only two foreigners available in Tim Seifert and Rovman Powell. We could see an all-Indian pace attack of Shardul Thakur, Chetan Sakariya and Khaleel Ahmed, with Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel forming the two-pronged spin attack.
Prithvi Shaw: Having failed a yo-yo test at the National Cricket Academy very recently, Prithvi Shaw will be eyeing redemption in this competition. He has played 53 IPL matches, in which the 22-year-old has amassed 1305 runs at an average of 24.62 and a strike rate of 146.30. In the last season itself, Shaw scored 479 runs at an average of 31.93 and a strike rate of 159.13. The lad from Mumbai has ten IPL half-centuries in his account, and while he is yet to score a century in this competition, Shaw struck a sensational 99 back in the 2019 edition.
Rohit Sharma: Mumbai Indians will be massively reliant once again on their inspirational leader – Rohit Sharma. The 34-year-old has scored 5611 runs in 213 IPL appearances, maintaining an average of 31.17 and a strike rate of 130.39. In the previous edition, Sharma scored 381 runs at an average of nearly 30 and scored one half-century, while in his overall IPL career, he has scored forty half-centuries and one century.
