About Reid Spencer

Reid Spencer is an award-winning sportswriter specializing in the coverage of auto racing, predominantly in the NASCAR realm. For the past 18 years, he has been the lead writer for the NASCAR Wire Service, which distributes NASCAR news to subscribers worldwide. 

In addition, he has covered college and professional golf, football, basketball, hockey, tennis and soccer for a variety of daily newspapers, magazines and Associated Press. Reid served as the NASCAR columnist for The Sporting News from 2006-2011 while continuing to provide content for the NASCAR Wire.

A varsity golfer during his days at Yale University, Reid is the author of the Sporting News book “50 Greatest Golfers: A Celebration of the All-Time Best.”

Reid is an accomplished singer/songwriter and guitarist who performs regularly with the NASCAR-centric band The Pit Road Pickers. He and songwriting partner James Connell are founders of the James Reid Band, whose original music can be heard here: www.JamesReidBand.com.

Experience

During his four-year tenure with the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer, Reid covered his first NASCAR race: the 1976 Coca-Cola 600, which featured the debut of Janet Guthrie.

Later, as a freelancer for the Charlotte daily, he served as beat writer for the Charlotte Checkers hockey team and the Kannapolis Intimidators Single-A baseball affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. 

Reid was elected by his peers to two terms as president of the National Motorsports Press Association and currently serves on the board of directors of that organization. He is also a member of the Golf Writers Association of America, the Golf Travel Writers Association and a past president of the Carolinas Golf Reporters Association.

Education

Reid earned a Bachelor of Arts in Drama from Yale University, as one of a handful of undergraduates admitted to the major. While in college, he lettered on the varsity golf team, reaching the No. 1 position during his sophomore season. Reid also played basketball for his residential college.
