We are not used to seeing Borussia Dortmund grind out wins with a minimum of fuss and Bayern Munich struggling for consistency, but that has been the case at times in the last few weeks. After beating RB Leipzig 3-2 at the beginning of February, Julian Nagelsmann’s side moved nine points clear at the summit of the standings. However, Bayern then proceeded to drop points in three of their next five league games, losing to Bochum and drawing with Bayer Leverkusen and Hoffenheim.
At the same time, Dortmund were showing the sort of steely resolve that had previously eluded them. A run of four wins in five games saw BVB close the gap at the top to just four points. Each of those four wins came to nil, as Marco Rose’s side successfully shut out the attacks of Union Berlin, Borussia Monchengladbach, Arminia Bielefeld and Mainz. Even without Erling Haaland, Dortmund continually found a way to get the job done.
However, the weekend immediately prior to the international break did not go well for Rose and co. Dortmund would have been desperate to at least keep the gap to four points, but a 1-1 draw with Mainz – together with Bayern’s 4-0 thumping of Union Berlin – handed the initiative back to the champions. If Dortmund slip up on Saturday, it could be game over as far as the Bundesliga title race is concerned.
It is debatable which of the two faces the stiffer test on matchday 28: Bayern take on Freiburg, who are below Leipzig in the table but will benefit from playing in front of their own fans. If the league leaders drop points in the earlier kick-off on Saturday, Dortmund will have the chance to put the heat on them once more.
RB Leipzig were always going to struggle to contend for the title this term – not just because of the financial discrepancy between them and Bayern, but also due to Nagelsmann’s departure last summer.
The initial hope was that this term could be used to bed in Jesse Marsch, a manager who knew the Red Bull system well from his time in New York and Salzburg. In fact, Leipzig’s campaign only really got going when an outsider was handed the reins instead.
Domenico Tedesco’s only previous Bundesliga job came at Schalke. Appointed at the start of the 2017/18 season, he led the Royal Blues to a second-place finish in his debut campaign. When you consider that Schalke are currently playing in the 2. Bundesliga after suffering relegation from the top tier last term, you can appreciate how well Tedesco did that year.
His second season did not go quite so well, but the Italian-born coach has given another demonstration of his acumen at Leipzig. “We need the ball”, he said after his first match in charge, an immediate illustration of his stylistic intentions. Leipzig have continued in that vein ever since, dialing back the heavy pressing and holding onto possession for longer periods.
Tedesco’s approach is paying dividends. Leipzig are in a strong position to finish in the top four, even though they are currently above fifth-placed Freiburg on goal difference alone. Their record in 2022 is fantastic: no team in the division – not even Bayern Munich or Borussia Dortmund – have accumulated more points this calendar year. Leipzig have also scored the most goals and conceded the fewest.
Dortmund should therefore be in no doubt that Saturday’s match will be a stern examination of their title credentials. Any dropped points here would surely hand the crown to Bayern, provided the champions get the job done at Freiburg. Two of Leipzig’s last three away games have ended in 6-1 victories, and while that will not happen at Signal Iduna Park, Tedesco’s side will pose a significant attacking threat.
So too will Dortmund, despite a relatively fallow period in front of goal which has seen them score just once in each of their last four Bundesliga fixtures. Haaland could be available again after a lengthier-than-anticipated spell on the sidelines, while further firepower is provided by the likes of Thorgan Hazard and Marco Reus.
Borussia Dortmund vs RB Leipzig could be one of the most entertaining soccer matches taking place anywhere in Europe this weekend, and we would heartily recommend tuning in if you are free on Saturday lunchtime. From a betting perspective, the most astute choice is to back over 3.5 goals.
