Whyte vs Franklin: The Gladiator Standing in the ‘Away’ Corner at the Bell Has a Golden Opportunity

Heavyweight champions Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk currently have the world championship belts tied up.

A unification bout looks far more likely than one of the pair losing their titles to a rival from further down the pecking order. A gulf in class exists between the top two and the rest of the division. But that’s not to say heavyweight boxing isn’t interesting the further down the list we go. And there’s a great example of this on Saturday at Wembley Arena, London.

Former world title challenger Dillian Whyte, who has fought both Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua in the past, prepares to roll the dice once again.

The hard-hitting fighter from London known as the Bodysnatcher has had a rollercoaster few years in the game, but it will all be worthwhile if he can win this bout. Victory for Dillian would shunt him back into contention for a shot at the two main players, while defeat would send the 35-year-old skittling down the heavyweight rankings.

The majority of the crowd packed into the iconic London venue will be there to cheer on Whyte, who hails from the Brixton area of the UK capital.

But that won’t phase his opponent too much. Franklin arrives from the United States eager to spoil the party with an upset win.

The gladiator standing in the ‘away’ corner at the bell has a golden opportunity to become an overnight sensation while winning some new fans in the UK. To achieve that, he must beat a more experienced fighter who remains ambitious.

Dillian Whyte vs Jermaine Franklin Pick

As you can see from the above table of betting odds, Whyte is the hot favourite with Caesars Sportsbook, and that’s a feeling shared by all leading bookies.

Traders believe the Body Snatcher will use his experience and the crowd to grab an important win and push him back toward the big names. He has lost each time he has stepped up and fought a recognised champion, but that won’t put him off having another crack at it next year.

Beat Franklin, and that’s what will happen, as this bout has been promoted as a world championship eliminator. That means - on paper, anyway - the winner will be next in line for a crack at the title.

But followers of the noble art already know eliminators don’t always follow the script. That will be put to one side for the evening as Whyte aims to get the result and impress a big crowd. He hasn’t always been the most popular fighter, but Dillian will be well-backed from the stands.

When browsing his recent form, we see why the bookies were in such a rush to keep Whyte close.

The Englishman brings a professional record of 28 wins against three defeats, with 19 victories by KO. He has never been beaten on points, with all three losses inflicted inside the distance. Joshua, Alexander Povetkin, and Fury stopped Dillian. His most recent outing came in London in April when taken out in round six by the Gypsy King at a packed Wembley boosted by millions more armchair fans watching from home.

Despite an impressive knockout average, two of Whyte’s last three wins have come on the scorecards. He is a big hitter with power in both fists and the burst of energy needed to put an opponent on his back. But Dillian is also a well-rounded boxer with a strong jab and a work rate to back it up when the going gets tough.

Dillian Whyte vs Jermaine Franklin Prediction

Our research and the form of the favorite lead us to believe that it’s a strong bet at great odds.

We are confident you will get a run for your money. Both men are expected to make reserved starts, with neither man looking to go on the attack from the first bell in the hope of landing a knockout punch.

We’re going against Franklin here, but there’s enough in the underdog’s form to suggest he is capable of competing at this level.

The 29-year-old from Michigan brings a 21-0-0 record with 14 KOs. He is currently ranked at number 54 in the world, but his skills are far superior to what his rankings suggest.

One thing is for sure, if the American can find a way to win on Saturday, we’ll be much closer to the top 10 than the top 50.
