It’s another exciting weekend of professional boxing as the sport ends 2024 on a high. The main attraction between now and the end of the year is the rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury next month in Saudi Arabia. Visit World Sports Network in the coming weeks for our in-depth preview and predictions on that world title decider. Until then, we focus our attention on Sunny Edwards vs Galal Yafai.

The standout fixture in this weekend’s boxing schedule comes from the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, where Edwards and Yafai meet over 12 rounds to decide the vacant WBC world flyweight title. Unbeaten Yafai holds the home advantage and will enjoy the backing of a deeply loyal support. Will he deliver the goods and win the world title belt before a sold-out arena and millions more watching the action live on DAZN? Londoner Edwards hopes to spoil the party by relying on his big-fight experience.

Which gladiator will claim an important victory in Birmingham on Saturday and ensure a money-spinning 2025? You can have your say on the result at the leading online sports betting websites, where you’ll find generous odds and entertaining markets, including the method of victory. Before parting with your hard-earned cash, read the thoughts and predictions of boxing writer and former professional fighter Frankie Monkhouse for WSN.

Sunny Edwards vs Galal Yafai Odds Predictions

Edwards Boasts Championship Experience

Sutton fighter Sunny Edwards will duck between the ropes on fight night as the more experienced man in this battle for the WBC flyweight title. The 28-year-old brings a CV detailing 21 wins against one defeat, with four of his victories coming inside the distance and the spare loss by stoppage. The only man to beat Showtime was American southpaw Jesse Rodriguez, who scored a ninth-round TKO win in Glendale to bag the IBF and WBO belts. It was a tough night’s work for Edwards, but his form since proves he has learned the harsh lessons of that first career defeat.

Since losing in America last December, Edwards has fought once and scored an impressive comeback win inside the distance. The 5’ 3” orthodox boxer with a 60” reach beat Adrian Curiel in round nine of a contest scheduled for 12 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix. It was a fight Sunny was the favorite to win, and he lived up to expectations, dominating his opponent and leading by a wide margin at the time of the stoppage. Edwards now returns to the UK for his first fight on British soil since June 2023, when he beat Andres Campos on points at Wembley Arena.

Edwards is swapping the glitz and glamor of a big fight in the United States for a domestic grudge match, but Saturday is the most important fight of his career so far. Victory is crucial, or he could slip down the rankings and miss out on those big title fights next year. Sunny must be at his best and will want to put on a show for a huge audience, but his team knows the result is more important than the performance. It’s a must-win fight if Edwards is to go on to become a major player again in the division. He can’t afford to lose to a domestic rival.

Yafai Unbeaten in Eight

Galal Yafai makes the short trip from his home to the Resorts World Arena, boasting an eight-fight unbeaten record as a professional. The 31-year-old famously won the flyweight gold medal at the 2020 Olympic Games and made the smooth transition to professional boxing, swapping the Team GB vest for the pursuit of a world title. He started with an impressive fifth-round TKO win over Carlos Vado Bautista at the O2 Arena in London, claiming the WBC International title on debut.

Team Yafai threw their man into the deep end and a fight for a major title in his first outing as they were convinced he had what it takes to compete in the professional ranks after dominating the amateurs. Galal proved them right with that stunning first win and quickly settled into the groove. He has beaten all eight of the opponents placed before him, scoring six of those victories inside the distance. His last win was the third-round stoppage of Sergio Orozco Olivia at the Park Community Arena in Sheffield at the end of summer.

Yafai has been fast-tracked through the division and is currently ranked number two in the UK but down at 14 in the world. Victory on Saturday would earn him the world title, but it would also send Yafai racing through the charts and into a prominent position, likely taking his place in the top ten. Winning on Saturday against a more experienced fighter is a big ask, but Yafai has passed every challenge put to him so far with flying colors. He’s ready to upset his critics by becoming world champion in less than ten bouts.

Sunny to Shine on Fight Night

What a fight we have in store here as two big names from British boxing go head-to-head for a world title. The winner will progress to huge fights in the new year, sending the loser back to the drawing board. But will the unbeaten Yafai and his amateur pedigree shine through, or will Edwards' battle-hardened experience make the difference?

I am going for Edwards's experience. He has been in some huge fights already, campaigned at the top level of the sport, and answered his critics when bouncing back from defeat with a strong win. He’s gutsy, happy to box on the road, and knows what it takes to impress the judges in big fights, and I’m backing him to win a classic.
