There’s room for just one more colossal boxing event before the curtain goes down on what has been a memorable year for the sport. What better way to finish 2024 and mark the festive period than with a heavyweight title fight and a rematch involving two giants of the sport? Oleksandr Usyk defends his WBO, WBC, and IBO world titles against Tyson Fury in a clash for the ages. But who will come out on top: the defending champion or the most famous fighter in the division?
Usyk and Fury famously shared a ring back in May in a unification bout for all four versions of the heavyweight championship. Fury entered that clash as the betting favorite with all major online sportsbooks but lost on a split decision. The scorecards were close, with one judge awarding the fight to Tyson while the other two sat at ringside and tallied the scores in favor of Oleksandr. Such a close contest meant a rematch was the only sensible way to settle things and deliver boxing enthusiasts the name of the best fighter.

Oleksandr Usyk will duck between the ropes on fight night, boasting three versions of the world heavyweight title. He was forced to relinquish the fourth belt won against Fury last time in order to ensure the rematch fans wanted to see. Rule-makers demanded Usyk face off against Daniel Dubois and stripped the champ of one belt after he chose another route. If Oleksandr beats Tyson again, he’ll likely face Dynamite Dubois next year if the Londoner gets past Joseph Parker in February.
Usyk’s boxing record shows 22 wins from as many bouts with 14 knockout victories. He’s not a fighter famous for his power, but he has stopped two opponents since moving from cruiserweight to heavyweight. The Ukranian took out Chazz Witherspoon inside seven rounds in 2019 and Daniel Dubois before the end of round nine in Poland in the summer of 2023. His winning streak at heavyweight also includes points victories over Derek Chisora, Anthony Joshua twice, and Tyson Fury.

Tyson Fury was dethroned by Usyk last time, suffering his first loss as a professional fighter since making his debut in 2008. He also dropped from the top spot to number three in the world heavyweight rankings behind Usyk and Dubois. All that will change if the former champion can get back to his best and score a revenge win to level the head-to-head scores. Victory means he’d likely race back to the head of the division and could plan a unification bout with Dubois, a trilogy with Usyk, or a mouth-watering grudge match with long-term rival Joshua.
Tyson has some interesting options if he beats Usyk, but the 6’ 9” giant of the sport knows he can’t look past Saturday’s test. There are many options open to Team Fury if Tyson gets the win with a third fight against Usyk the most likely move. However, the fighter could face retirement from his long and successful career if he suffers back-to-back defeats. Despite bringing an impressive record of 34 wins, one draw, and a defeat, Tyson knows his latest outing is a must-win. Does he have enough left in the tank to shock the world and ensure he has the belts back in England in time for Christmas?

Who wins the rematch? The talking ends on Saturday, and the action begins for both fighters. But it’s also a chance for fans to make their feelings clear by predicting the outcome and betting on the winner. Will Usyk do the double with another win to finally move past Fury, or will the Gypsy King pull off a career-best performance to blow the division wide open, getting his career firmly back on track? We can’t wait to find out.
The first fight in May was a split decision, but I thought Usyk won comfortably and I saw nothing from either man to suggest things will be different this time. Usyk is the smaller man, but he’s a better boxer, has quicker hands, boasts a fast southpaw style and his punches are accurate. He’ll box at range, hitting Fury with the jab before relying on his footwork and ring IQ to glide out of range.
Usyk’s style is easy to admire, and he’ll win over the judges, just like he did in May. I expect the best version of Tyson Fury, with the challenger aiming to use his natural size, reach, and weight advantages, but Usyk has never looked out of his depth at heavyweight. We’ll see another masterclass from the champion, and I’m advising a bet on him to record another win on the scorecards. Back Usyk on points at +188, and you’ll find those odds available on the bet365 website and smartphone app.
