It’s the United States of America versus the United Kingdom as Mikaela Mayer and Sandy Ryan renew rivalries. The warring pair met at Madison Square Gardens in New York last summer, with Mayer sneaking a majority decision win on the scorecards. Will she add a second victory, or will England’s Ryan fire back?

Mikaela Mayer is an American professional boxer with a record detailing 20 wins against two defeats, five victories scored inside the distance, and both losses on the scorecards. The 34-year-old from Colorado is the current WBO world welterweight champion and hopes that remains the case at the end of the fight.
Alycia Baumgardner inflicted the first of two losses on Mayer’s card on points at the O2 Arena in London in late 2022. The second defeat came against Natasha Jonas in Liverpool last January with the IBF world title on the line. Both defeats were on a split decision, showing just how close Mayer came to arriving as an undefeated world champion and holder of multiple belts.
Since suffering that agonising loss to Jonas at the Echo Arena, Mayer returned to defeat Sandy Ryan on a majority decision in New York. After ten close rounds, the fight went to the scorecards, asking the three scoring judges sat at ringside to declare their winner. The first official went 97-93 to Mayer. The second returned 96-94 to Mayer, with the final card stuck at a 95-95 draw, hence the majority decision.

Sandy Ryan is a 31-year-old from Derby, England. She travels to Las Vegas as the challenger and a proud boxer eager to claim revenge following that close fight in New York last year. Returning to England with the belt and her slice of revenge would cap a perfect weekend and start to 2025 for Sandy. But beating Mayer in the States is no mean feat, and Team Ryan must be at their best.
Ryan’s record looks like seven wins against two draws and one defeat. She has three knockout victories, both losses came on the scorecards, and she has that one draw from 2023 against Jessica McCaskill in Orlando with three versions of the world championship at stake. Since fighting out a ten-round draw with McCaskill, Ryan has fought twice. She stopped Terri Harper inside four rounds before suffering defeat to Mayer.
Ryan will feel she did many things right in New York last year and knows she has a great chance in the rematch. Sandy wants to show she has the boxing IQ and progression to learn from her last fight with Mayer and find a way to win. She’s certainly capable and is here on merit, but can she go one better?

There was very little between the two fighters in their first meeting in New York, and I expect the rematch to follow a similar pattern. I like Ryan as a fighter and she belongs in this company. But she isn’t as experienced as her opponent, which will show on fight night.
I’m going for Mayer to pick up where she left off and score another points win, although it won’t be as tight this time. Mayer was the deserving winner of this first bout, and a unanimous decision wouldn’t have flattered her. She’ll continue the great work from last time while finding the improvement needed to be more convincing.
Back Mayer to land another points win over Ryan at odds of +120 with bet365.
