Juan Carlos Ramirez makes his return to the ring following a tight points defeat that was inflicted by Scotland’s world champion Josh Taylor in Las Vegas last May.
That thrilling contest entertained the masses and pushed the scoring judges hard for a decision. Still, the night ended with a worthy winner as the Tartan Tornado returned to Edinburgh with four versions of the super lightweight world championship.
Fight fans were intrigued as to how former champion Ramirez would return. Would he come back as good a fighter as he was previously, and would he jump in with a live opponent or take an easier route back to the top? Those questions remained unanswered for almost a year but on Saturday at the Save Mart Arena in Fresno, Ramirez will face off against Puerto Rico’s Jose Pedraza in a 12-round bout.
No title will be on the line here, but it’s a chance for both men to enhance their careers.
Claim a comeback win, and Ramirez would nudge himself back into the picture for major honors. Cause an upset by claiming victory, and Pedraza would become an overnight sensation, catapulting his name through the rankings and towards the division’s major names.
Which fighter will get their wish? You can place your bets on the outcome of this bout at the match-winner odds advertised below.

All the pressure is on Ramirez in this fight. Before running into Taylor, he was the main man of the division.
Many respected boxing experts viewed the 29-year-old from California as a long-term ruler of super lightweight with the skills, size, and strength needed to ensure you could move through the ranks in the future.
He was beaten on points by the Scotsman, and it’s now all on him to show he still has a lot to offer. In modern boxing, a defeat is seen as the end of the road or the potential to wreck a career, but that doesn’t have to be the case.
Many world-famous boxers have returned from a loss as better boxers, and Ramirez is capable of doing that. It’s not about the defeat but how he bounces back from it that will define where he goes.
Almost a year out of the ring isn’t ideal, and it may have been a good idea to come back against a less dangerous opponent, but the fact Ramirez is desperate to test himself is a measure of the man.
He wants to show he has learned the lessons of that fight with Taylor, used his time away from the gym to grow and improve then will come back stronger.
The win is important here, but the American will also be eager to put on a show. He’ll want to thank his supporters who have stuck by him and can do this by putting on a show.
Ramirez is the hot favourite in the betting to win this fight, which comes as no surprise. If he is anywhere near as good as he was before that loss to Taylor, he will have more than enough to handle Pedraza and get back to winning ways.
As you can see from the fight winner betting posted earlier on this page, there’s no point backing Ramirez for the win.
The odds are just too tight, with traders at the top online bookies doing what they can to discourage this type of gamble.
There are some specials worth a look through, and the method of victory betting gives us options. If we go with Ramirez for the win, it’s worth predicting how he’ll get the job done, and you can back a KO victory, or a points win. When looking through his stats, we note five of Ramirez’s last six bouts have gone to points.
The former champ will want to win after an extended period on the sidelines, but he’d also welcome a few rounds under his belt and backing the points verdict makes sense.
Pedraza has been written off by the bookies and comes into this bout without pressure. He knows all eyes are on his opponent, and this has allowed him to fly under the radar during his preparation.
He’ll come to fight and see this as a great opportunity to enhance his career and change his life. If Pedraza wins, he could set up a big-money fight with Taylor, possibly in the United Kingdom or Las Vegas, in what would be a pay per view showdown worth millions. Pedraza is sitting on a potentially winning lotto ticket here. Does he have the skills needed to cash it in? We don’t think so.
