Arsène Wenger - In or Out? (Infographic)

We looked at one of the most discussed coaches in Premier League this season and created an infographic about him, showing, among other things, his previous engagements and the football players he has turned into true football legends.

Wenger took over Arsenal in 1996 and has achieved great success during his 20 years in the club. He has won 7 FA Cup titles, 7 Community Shield titles and 3 Premier League titles. The highlight of Wenger’s reign must be the 2003/04 season, when “The Invincibles”, consisting of players like Patrick Vieira, Freddie Ljungberg, Dennis Bergkamp and Thierry Henry, went through the entire Premier League season without losing a single match. Arsène Wenger has also become famous for his consistent success in qualifying Arsenal for the Champions League. Wenger had succeeded in taking Arsenal to the world’s finest club team tournament during all of its seasons in the club, until 2016/17 when it came in 5th place and missed the Champions League game. This season is even worse as Arsenal is currently sitting at 6th place with almost the only chance of qualifying for the Champions League being through winning the Europa League. The relationship between Wenger and Arsenal fans has gotten even worse after a bad start in 2018 where Arsenal went out to Nottingham in the FA Cup and lost 5 out of 7 matches in the Premier League, including one back-to-back loss to Manchester City 0-3 (one in the Premier League, the other in the Carabao final).

Repeated Protests from Fans

Arsenal did indeed end up second in the Premier League just two years ago, but after that the team’s performance only deteriorated. The majority of the fans have grown tired of Wenger, and most of them think that after 22 years it’s time for someone new to take charge. Repeatedly, spectators have held “Wenger Out” banners to make him leave the club, and the criticism reached its peak against Stoke City at the end of last season. An airplane had been arranged to fly over the bet365 Stadium during the match between Stoke and Arsenal, with the slogan “Wenger – Out means out !!”. Wenger saw the plane, but said he did not care about the message. “I get paid to do my job, for a club I love, and I will do it for as long as I’m here, with commitment. I’m not affected at all,” Wenger said. Wenger’s contract expires in the summer of 2019, but many rumours say that he will be gone already by this summer. Wenger himself has said that he does not weigh in the views of the fans when it comes to whether he will stay in the club or not, but the supporters hope to at least succeed in influencing club owner Stan Kroenke. Kroenke has a very good relationship with his close friend Arsène Wenger, but even when it comes to friends, patience has its limits.

Europa League Is Key for Wenger’s Survival

Last night Arsenal played in the Europa League and ended with an excellent result, beating CSKA Moscow 4-1. The match has given Wenger a lifeline, but bad results in their upcoming matches might turn the tables against him.
