Right now betting on sports on the internet in West Virginia is a bit limited. The good news is that there are lots of places to make bets in person and more online betting options are expected to arrive soon.
In this section, we’ll explain where to go to bet on sports both online and land-based sportsbooks and casinos.
More online sportsbooks are also expected to become available in early 2019, but for now, BetLucky is the only option.
BetLucky’s parent company Delaware North delayed opening a physical sportsbook in West Virginia until their online platform was ready. They went live, both online and in-person, in October 2018.
BetLucky is fully licensed and regulated by the West Virginia Lottery Commission, meaning that your money and personal details are secure when you use the app.
Previously in West Virginia, the only online sports betting options were unregulated offshore sites, which were not strictly legal and something of a risk to use. BetLucky means that problem is now gone.
Some frustrated bettors who live in states that have not yet legalized sports betting are using VPNs in order to trick sportsbooks into thinking they are making bets from regulated states such as West Virginia. Sportsbooks are now combatting this location fraud with location validator apps such as GeoComply, making it harder for this kind of practice to carry on.
The BetLucky app can be downloaded from their website or from app stores.
There are currently five casinos in West Virginia, all of which have in-person sportsbooks. They are:
All of these betting venues are fully licensed and regulated.
The Hollywood Casino has an impressive set up. The casino is creating a dedicated area for the sportsbook, with 80-inch televisions and for watching sports live, as well as odds screens. Improvements are still underway, and lounge seating and further expansion is expected soon.
The sportsbook at the Casino Club at The Greenbrier Resort is part of the only private casino in the United States. Access is reserved for members of the hotel, making the sportsbook an intimate and exclusive experience, in contrast to some of the larger commercial sportsbooks.
The Mountaineer Casino sportsbook is more traditional, with a number of video screens and seating available for customers. The casino is located a lot further north than the other West Virginia options, not far from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Both the Wheeling Island sportsbook and the Mardi Gras sportsbook are run by the Delaware North group, with the former serving the north of the state and the latter located more centrally. Both are comparatively small sportsbooks, but with a full range of betting options.
While there is only one option for full online sports betting in West Virginia, the TVG horse racing app is an alternative for fans of horse racing. The app is available in 32 states across the US and is dedicated to betting on horse racing.
West Virginia residents are free to bet on races at over 150 tracks around the world, and even watch the races live – all directly on the app. There is a range of bets available.
The TVG app is a great compliment to the online betting scene in the Mountain State, especially while we wait for more online sportsbooks to get up and running.
At the moment, there is only one online betting site available in West Virginia – BetLucky. However, more options are due to be unveiled in early 2019, and the sign-up process for online betting sites tends to be pretty similar.
Follow these step by step instructions for how to sign up to BetLucky. When more options are available, you can expect the process to be very similar:
All the information that you provide is protected by the West Virginia Lottery Commission.
The sign-up process above is specific to BetLucky, but the same basic steps will apply to other West Virginia online sportsbooks too.
Virtually all online sportsbooks offer new members a welcome bonus and BetLucky is no different. The bonus available tends to change, but it is often in the form of free money that matches your first deposit. Make sure you use our links when you sign up to get the best bonus available.
Once you have successfully signed up and claimed your bonus, all you need to do is deposit money to begin betting.
BetLucky accepts the following methods for depositing money. We expect other WV online betting sites to accept the same options:
All of these methods are fairly typical for online sportsbooks, and you can expect future sportsbooks in West Virginia to have similar deposit options.
Withdrawing your money tends to be a little more difficult, with longer processing times and restrictions in terms of the methods. BetLucky allows you to withdraw money the same way you deposited, which is convenient.
Once you have signed up and successfully deposited your money, you are ready to begin betting.
The BetLucky app is easy to use. On the home screen, you can either browse different sports or view in-play betting. All the major sports are available with BetLucky. When you click on the “betting slip” feature of the app you can choose between straight, parlay or round robin bets.
To place a bet on the app, simply click the sport, then the game, then the bet, and it should appear on your betting slip. You can type in different stakes to see how much you would stand to win.
BetLucky is easy to use and very attractive for first-time bettors. However, it has a somewhat limited selection of sports and bets available. When the new online betting options run by Caesars and FanDuel make their way to the market, you can expect a wider range of options.
While the five in-person sportsbooks available in the Mountain State may not be the biggest ones in the US, they all have everything you need to bet in person.
One of the big draws of betting in person compared with betting online is that you can watch your bet play out in real time on dedicated TV screens in the sportsbook.
Placing an in-person sports wager in West Virginia is easy.
Generally, physical sportsbooks have the option of placing your bet with a teller, or using an electronic kiosk.
If you have any questions, or simply don’t want to use the kiosks, then you can talk to the teller at the betting window, and they will place your bet for you and give you a paper bet slip in exchange. They can also answer any questions you might have.
Electronic kiosks tend to resemble online sportsbooks, but you don’t need to create an account to use them. You can simply look through the different betting options available, place your bet and the kiosk will print out a bet slip for you.
To cash in winning bets in person, simply bring your bet slip to the teller window, and they will give you your winnings in cash.
You will also be able to withdraw money that you win using an online sportsbook in the physical sportsbook.
While betting online is very convenient, it does not quite match up to the excitement of placing a bet in a sportsbook – especially when you can watch the game in question on the big screens. Many of the West Virginia casinos are already expanding their new physical sportsbooks to make them more user friendly.
While you wait for a wider range of online betting options to become available, consider going in to check out the new in-person sportsbooks available in West Virginia.
The current sports betting boom in the US began with a huge decision by the Supreme Court in May 2018.
By removing the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) which had been in place since 1992, the Court opened the floodgates for legal sports gambling across the US.
Many states began the process of legalization in the wake of that decision, with lawmakers writing and debating bills to put before the state legislature.
Other states, such as West Virginia, had planned for the Supreme Court decision in advance. The Mountain State passed a sports betting bill in March 2018, which came into effect once PASPA had been repealed.
After a few months of preparation, sports betting went live at the end of the summer.
Here is an overview of the sports betting laws in West Virginia:
Since these laws came into effect, the five casinos in West Virginia have all opened operating sportsbooks.
In addition, the BetLucky online and mobile app is up and running in West Virginia. The online sportsbook is operated by Delaware North, who have a partnership with the Mardi Gras Casino near Charleston.
Betting on sports in West Virginia is easy and it’s only going to get easier.
BetLucky is great introduction to online sports betting from WV residents, and you can expect more options to become available in early 2019, with a wider range of bets, sports and offers on tap.
Don’t forget that in order to use any West Virginia sports betting app you need to be physically present inside the state. Remember to use our links whenever you sign up to WV betting app to make sure you get the best welcome bonus possible.
With five physical sportsbooks currently in operation, there are plenty of options for legal and regulated sports betting in the Mountain State, online and offline.
This is just the start for West Virginia. Expect the sports betting industry to grow and grow in the Mountain State.
