As the Belarusian Premier League enters game week five, Dinamo Minsk is certainly concerned over their start to the season. Their form isn’t representative of the seven-time champions.
With a single win on the season, Dinamo’s sole victory has come against Torpedo BelAZ. Despite the 2-0 victory, losses to Gorodeya, FC Minsk, and Rukh spoiled their progress.
Dinamo have a lot of work to do when they take on Neman Grodno. In their last match against Gorodeya, Dinamo enjoyed over 60% possession for the match but failed to find the winning or even match-tying goal all match long.
Manager: Igor Kovalevich {Current: 1-2-1 (11th in Vysheyshaya Liga) | Top Scorer: Gegham Kadymyan (2) | Form: LLWDD}
Expected Starting XI:
(GK) #91 D. Dudar – (DEF) #23 A. Slabashevich, #4 A. Vasiljev, #28 D. Stojkovic, #3 G. Kantaria, #17 E. Khvalko, – (MID) #24 A. Yakimov, #18 P. Zabelin, – (FWD) #7 G. Kadymyan, #13 G. Rassadkin, #45 Z. Marusic
Neman have been as disappointing as Minsk in their recent matches, although they’ve had less pressure on them. They’ve not won a match since their win against FC Vitebsk.
Despite Neman’s steadiness in the top division of Belarusian football, they’ve not come close to winning the league since their second-place finish in 2002.
Neman Grodno will have to improve on their away form if they hope to take down Dinamo Minsk. The Belarusian giants have only allowed one goal at home, while Grodno have yet to score on the road.
Dinamo Minsk and Neman Grodno have met 58 times across all competitions. Dinamo leads the all-time series with 30 wins compared to 14 losses.
A win for Dinamo Minsk could send them as high as tenth in the league table.
A win for Neman Grodno could send them as high as third in the league table.
With the suspension to Danilo after accumulating two yellow cards, leading to his sending off, Dinamo Minsk will be without their chief creative force in the midfield.
All eyes will be on 27 year old forward Yauheni Shykauka. The six-foot tall striker already has a goal and an two assists in all competitions this season. While he’s mostly been used as a substitute, his immediate impact on the game could be used in lieu of the creative Danilo.
Shykauka will have to put up with up to 90 minutes of wrestling with hard-nosed Grodno centre backs Danijel Stojkovic and Andrey Vasilijev.
Winger Gegham Kadymyan has had an up and down career, known as a skilled and strong winger. With an injury-plagued career at only 27, Kadumyan has shown new life with Grodno.
Kadymyan has been one of Grodno’s most effective attacking players this season, having scored two of the clubs four goals this season.
Manager Igor Kovalevich will be counting on the Armenian international to pressure an already struggling Dinamo back line.
While FC Dinamo Minsk have failed to get off to the strong start that they’ve wanted, they have been able to enjoy the bulk of possession in their matches. Whether they can do the same without Danilo in the lineup is up for debate, but Grodno’s backline doesn’t seem to present enough opposition either way.
WSN Pick’s: Dinamo Minsk 2-0 Neman Grodno.
